» jiugiusti - Teaching computer for children

Hello,
As a matter of fact, I am searching for 2 types of info that might be linked.

I might get a teaching computer job in a school (elementary, secondary and high school) next year and I am trying to find a whole programme (sofwares included) that can help me build my teaching.

If I fail to get the job, I am planning to open a computer center for children (up to 18 years old) and I am searching for a whole programme (software and games) that can be useful for them to learn computer and be an asset for them to learn their regular school courses (math, geography, history, science, etc..)

Please advise.
Thank you

Where are you located? I get the feeling from some of the spellings it might be Canada, is that correct? The reason I'm asking is that the information I can give you will differ to some extent.

Hello again Sharon, and thanx for replying back,

I just read the Suite101.com Posting Etiquette and I can't see where did I go wrong in my first post. Could you please advise on that? Thanx

For the time being, I live in france but my teaching opportunity will probably be in an american school (children and teen teaching) in beirut/lebanon.

Thank you again for advising.

The post is fine, but it did come through twice. Strange, but I wouldn't worry about it.

First, let me say that there is no one program that will do everything that you are looking for. I don't know about international schools, but the big push here in North America is technology integration, which is basically using technology as a tool to the regular classroom rather than a separate piece of the curriculum.

I need to know a little more about what you are trying to teach. If you get the teaching job, do they have a curriculum set up? Are there standards and objectives that you will have to meet? You would really need to know those things before I could give you some program information. I do a lot of project based learning with my students in connection with their curriculum. For example, my 6th graders did a Power Point presentation last year on the planets, a lesson I worked out with our 6th grade science teacher. She provided the outline of the project, and I helped the students do the research and learn to create the Power Points.

As for the computer center, I would again need to know the focus. Do you want to teach typing skills? Mavis Beacon is a great software program for that. There are many software programs out that focus on subject areas, such as Oregon Trail and Liberty Kids for history, Mathquest for Math, etc. There are Middle School/High School software bundles that encompass all the core curriculum pieces as well.

If you can give me more specific information, I'll see how I can help.

A Bientot!
